United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres urged Israel on Monday to allow civilians in Gaza to flee Israeli-Palestinian fighting by crossing the border into Egypt. In a statement issued from his Geneva office, Guterres also implicitly told Egypt -- and other countries that do not have frontiers with Gaza -- that they had a duty to give shelter to refugees from the conflict. President-elect Barack Obama and his new national security team face many challenges and offer differing views on how to address them. The team features former Democratic primary rival Hillary Rodham Clinton, his pick for secretary of State; Defense Secretary Robert Gates, a Republican and Bush administration holdover; and former Marine Corps commandant James Jones, his pick for national security adviser. Obama will also consult with Susan Rice, his choice for ambassador to the United Nations, and Vice President-elect Joe Biden. "I'm going to be welcoming a vigorous debate inside the White House," Obama said.

JERUSALEM - No one can say they didn't see it coming: Israel on Monday expelled a United Nations investigator who compared Israeli policies to the Nazi Holocaust. Rep. Ellison makes pilgrimage to Mecca 15 Dec 2008 at 10:43am
WASHINGTON - Back home he's one of the 535 most powerful lawmakers in America, but last week, on the holiest week in Islam's holiest city, U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison was just one among the estimated 3 million travelers making the pilgrimage to Mecca. "You forget who you are - black or white and American or African - and where you come from when you are before God circling the Kabba (the large masonry cubic structure near Mecca) in a two-piece unstitched garment," Ellison said in a CNN interview last week.
A hidden culinary gem 15 Dec 2008 at 5:39am
Tucked within the labyrinth that is the Tunis medina, Dar el Jeld is tricky to find - just ask around for directions - and a hard table to get - we telephoned our reservations from Chicago (in English) two weeks prior. But it's also Tunisia's top restaurant, fusing the country's North African roots with French flavors. Upon arrival we snacked on complimentary tuna and olives and baguette bread dipped in harissa, a spicy red pepper sauce served with most Tunisian specialties. Then our appetizer arrived - fritures de poisson, battered fish and shrimp with grilled calamari and a squeeze of lime. The batter was light and the fish fresh but nothing dramatically different or better than your average deep-fryer fare. Instead go for the brik a la viande, with meat, hard-boiled egg and a smattering of vegetables encased and baked in filo dough and served with a little lime and a swab of harissa.
Safety at the speed of life 15 Dec 2008 at 5:35am
We have all heard the saying "time is money." A few months ago, I heard a senior executive of a major retail chain put it another way: "Speed is life." The faster he can get products into the United States and onto store shelves, the bigger the edge he'll have over competitors. Of course, whenever you're in a hurry, you're tempted to take risks. The challenge is to keep trade moving at a competitive speed without sacrificing safety. We have seen safety sacrificed in recent years, but we have responded with a thorough examination of our present protections and a fundamental revision of our import-safety strategy.
With elections in February, Israel searching for its Obama 14 Dec 2008 at 5:32am
JERUSALEM - While U.S. Sen. Barack Obama was running for president, Israeli pundits publicly fretted that he was too green, too liberal and too naive to capably navigate diplomatic quagmires in the Middle East. Now, Israeli politicians can't get enough of the president-elect.

Still learning, Panthers lineman Jeff Otah hinting at potential 13 Dec 2008 at 5:27am
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The NFL world beyond Charlotte took notice of Jeff Otah on Monday night. As the Carolina Panthers struggled to take control late in the first half of their game against Tampa Bay, they faced a second-and-goal from the Buccaneers 2. It was no time for anything fancy. Quarterback Jake Delhomme handed the ball to rookie running back Jonathan Stewart, who hit the right side of the line with a fury.

Owner's illness jolts Panthers' organization 13 Dec 2008 at 5:21am
On most National Football League teams, the owner is distant and unseen to the players, except for on game day or for special occasions. They have frequent contact with the general manager and the coach but to the players, owners are, basically, just a checkbook. That's not the case with the Carolina Panthers. That's why the news that owner Jerry Richardson is awaiting a heart transplant has taken some of the luster off the Panthers' run atop the NFC South Division.
Eagles' linebackers not in the interception game 13 Dec 2008 at 5:20am
Jim Johnson, the Eagles' defensive coordinator, asks a lot of his linebackers. For the most part, he has gotten the answers he's wanted in the form of tackles for losses (23), quarterback hurries (nine), fumble recoveries (four), and passes knocked down (13). "Solid," Johnson said Friday when asked to assess the play of his linebackers. "I'm happy with them."

Aiming to get back: Brett Favre in familiar position as Jets jockey for playoffs 11 Dec 2008 at 11:16pm
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - Brett Favre has made these December playoff pushes so many times before, with many different casts of characters. That dazzling Green Bay offense in 2003 that compensated for its poor defense. The gutsy 2002 Packers who won despite being so banged up. The inexperienced but talented receivers and backs who ran so well after the catch last season. Just a few examples. But Favre being Favre, he still had to pull out the Super Bowl ring he won with the Green Bay Packers in 1997 and show it to his New York Jets teammates on the plane last week, headed for California. As if to say that Ty Law, Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, Thomas Jones, Eric Barton and Kris Jenkins weren't the only Jets to have played in Super Bowls somewhere else.
